Hey Buttercups! It’s been a while but I am here. Frankly speaking, I was feeling a little uninspired as of late with the delay of our home purchase. Real estate and the buying or selling of it is so nerve wracking and heart wrenching at times. And while things aren’t 100% settled yet, I’m optimistic things are gonna work out for the best and I can not wait to show you what we’ve been up to. As in true Mary fashion, I don’t want to jinx it too much and show you just yet. Although… if you saw my IG last night, I gave ya a little sneaky peeky. On another IG note, I’ve been getting more into doing Instastories so if you wanna see my pertty face, check that out!
In more news, I’ve been published in a blog by 76th and Newbury , a website for custom design work. It’s so exciting and I feel honored to be considered an expert by them in Nursery Design. Scroll down to see the post or click here to view it.
I hope you have a Merry Christmas or a Happy Hanukkah. I’ll be spending tonight with my Abuelos and mom and my brother and his family (my eldest brother is in Peru with his in-laws- so jealous!) at our Noche Buena celebration, a favorite Cuban tradition of mine.
Feliz Navidad!
Nursery Design Trends for 2017
by Amanda Naqvi |
The new year is just around the corner! And if you’re anything like us at 76th & Newbury, you’d be thrilled to discover the top nursery trends in 2017.
2016 brought us woodland themes and geometric wallpapers. What new trends would be popular this time?
We sought out some of the most respectable nursery design experts in the US and asked them to share their predictions for the top nursery decorating trends for 2017.
Turn your nursery into a sanctuary that both you and your baby can enjoy! Check out the upcoming nursery design trends that are predicted to blow up in 2017.
Decorating a whole nursery can be intimidating, especially if you’ve never tried doing so before. It isn’t always easy to mix and match patterns and colors – and boy are there a lot of colors in different shades to choose from! You’ll also have to think about the functionality of each furniture that you put in, which is something that needs careful consideration when the room you’re decorating is for a newborn baby. And the trends! You know they keep changing every so often, but it can be very hard to look away and not follow every single design trend you hear of – which can backfire when you try to cram as many trendy design ideas into a single space all at once.
Below are the predictions of 5 nursery design experts:

2016
2016 has taken a turn when styling a nursery. We see a lot of gender neutral designs and nurseries that could accommodate both a baby boy or a baby girl. My favorite nursery trend for 2016 are neutral geometrics and stripes.
- Gender neutral designs
- Neutral geometrics
- Stripes
2017
Instead of focusing on a specific gender, our color prediction for 2017 are dark and moody colors. Whether you choose a solid wall or go with a bold wallpaper keep the dark colors in mind. The dark hues magically make all your nursery furniture stand out. A trend that I see flourishing for 2017 are Persian rugs. They add texture and are a beautiful choice for any gender. Also we are staying away from actual changing tables. We are seeing more and more dressers and credenzas that can be easily turned into a chaining station if needed. Dressers are not only more style friendly but are more functional than a changing table. A must have nursery item is a rocking chair. They are functional and add the perfect touch for your babies new home.
- Dark and moody colors
- Persian rugs
- Dressers and credenzas as changing tables
- Rocking chairs

Bling- we loved seeing that people were giving some thought and love to the lighting that goes into their newborn’s room. With so many beautiful lights out there in varying price ranges, you can really add a punch to the ceiling with a dramatic light fixture. Also the Morrocan style poofs which we think will hold strong for the coming seasons!

When it comes to nurseries, I tend to stray from the traditional children’s colors, you know, like pink for a girl and blue for a boy and really focus in more on the theme. We create sophisticated rooms with the perfect amount of modern style. Christina and I love to create gender neutral rooms with mixing unexpected textures, clean lines, accent walls and artwork so it’s fun for the baby/child.
- Gender neutral designs
- Unique textures and clean lines
- Wall accents and artwork
- Focus on fun
2017
My trend prediction for this upcoming year is designers will start creating spaces that appeal to the child, but are sophisticated enough to appeal to the parent as well. Gender neutral rooms are another prediction. Christina and I love this idea and use it often.
Theme Prediction
For my son, Landon, we stayed away from the typical nautical theme for boys now a days and went with a beachy boho\sophisticated theme and we are absolutely in love with it! I used darker color, such as grey and black but also have white in there to brighten it up. I added some awesome plants to pull the whole space together.
I think for a girl trend for a nursery right now would be something more edgy maybe instead of your typical pink and soft pastels. Also doing either a fun accent wallpaper wall with geometric shapes is a theme that is becoming popular.
a really cool gender neutral theme we would use is called Cosmic Chic…meaning lots of bright colors mixed with blacks and silvers. I’m sure we would use metallic colors to accent the room also!
Color Prediction
Jewel toned rooms are super in right now. With that being said Christina and I would probably do a really cool orange for a boys wall and an awesome blueish green for a girls wall. Color prediction for GD would be a grey to be safe or to mix it up (which we love doing) a jade colored wall would be sick!
Pattern Prediction
We absolutely LOVE patterns. Patterns really make the room unique and pleasing to the eye. For boys a pattern we would use is either plus signs or lightning bults. For a girl we love using arrows and stars. For GD we predict people will be using a lot of stripes, triangles and zig zags.
Must Have Nursery Items
Must haves for your child nursery are statement storage units and a play area of their own. Your child’s collection of toys and books will grow over time, and most likely never stop growing! So to have a bookshelf to put books on with felt baskets on it or next to it, will really present a way to make the room look clean without having to hide things away in a closet. The play area all to their self is so so so important. Having their won space vs a basement or play room enables your child to have options and gives them the opportunity to mix it up a bit! We LOVE creating these special spaces in nurseries and children’s rooms. We will add a tepee, or a large doll house to the space. Christina and I also think its important to have a chair in the nursery accompanied with a really awesome, soft textured rug. The chair is useful for when feeding, or reading to a child. We suggest comfortable chairs with cushion on them. You can add fun patterned pillows and a fuzzy blanket for story time!
- Fun and sophisticated designs
- Gender neutral designs
- Darker colors with white accents
- Plants
- Wallpaper with geometric shapes
- “Cosmic Chic” bright colors mixed with blacks and silvers
- Jewel toned rooms
- Unique patterns
- Statement storage units and bookshelves
- Separate play area
- Nursery chair
- Textured rugs

2016
My favorite nursery trend of 2016 was the Woodland/woodland animals. I used the theme in a nursery of a client and it was lovely. I mixed it with some modern elements, so it wasn’t too baby.
- Woodland animals
2017
While I still think that people will decorate for the gender they are having, I think that in 2017 people will use more of the gender neutral colors, like grey. Grey is still huge in the design industry and I think it’ll be big in nurseries as well.
I think the concept of designing the room with the mindset of having the child grow into the space is gaining some ground. I’ve done this for both my boys and it’s worked well as we transitioned my oldest from a nursery to a toddler’s room. Using unexpected pieces work well too, like a bench or an extra table. These elements give the room interest.
Must have nursery item: a comfy and chic rocking chair.
- Gender neutral colors
- Benches or an extra table
- Rocking Chairs
