Since Freddy’s first birthday is coming up- tomorrow (man that went fast) I wanted to share the story of his nursery. Almost immediately after finding out I was pregnant, I started to plan the nursery and since I was convinced I was having a girl, it was easy peasy. The nursery would be pink of course with grey and gold accents. A beautiful chandelier would illuminate the room and the stunning crib would be the focal point in all its’ frilly gloriousness. Sounds good right? WRONG!
It’s a boy!
What the hell was I gonna do!? I didn’t plan on a boy and now my design was out the window. So onto plan B- which took a long time I’ll admit. I designed and redesigned and redesigned again. The one thing I knew for sure was that I didn’t want an overly juvenile space. I wanted Freddy’s furniture and other accessories to grow with him.
So I had about 4.5 months to plan and plan I did! I poured over baby blogs and Pinterest nursery boards and while I saw many a gorgeous baby room, nothing was coming to me. I felt drained. I couldn’t get it together.
But then I found this fabric. Yahoo!
I loved the colors. This would be my jumping off point. Finally- something!
Little by little I had gotten back on track and created makeshift moodboards (before I figured out how to use Photoshop properly). These 2 were the BIG contenders- the rugs options gave the space a totally different feel but ultimately I couldn’t go with the “red” one. It was more pink than red and it was probably my subconscious longing for pink!
At this point in the design I was going for rugged mountain mixed with the sophistication of Chinoiserie (that dresser- I die!). The rugged mountain was coming from our trip out west where I fell in love with nature all over again- especially the majestic Bison which we got a chance to see VERY up close.
I happened to stumble on this gorgeous watercolor by this amazing Etsy artist and knew immediately it had to be in the baby’s room.
It’s now happily in Freddy’s room in the gallery of family pictures and other artwork. Love me some Bison!
An occupational hazard of being a designer is that you are exposed to beautiful things all the time. This was the game changer in this nursery design around November when I went to a showroom for a school trip and found this glorious rug. Suddenly something clicked. I had truly found what this nursery needed. I had to have it for his room and since it wasn’t jiving with the fabric- out the fabric went.
From the day this rug went on the floor I felt like the designer in me was back! I knew what this room would look like and I was eager to get it done. So we purchased a few more items.

We had the nursery finished for Freddy’s early arrival. I really love how the space turned out.
